Jack Whelan – A Smart Liberal

I don’t agree with a lot of what Jack Whelan has to say.  But there’s no denying that he’s a great writer and when it comes to oil politics, I think he’s right on the money.  He writes about it’s impact on Neocon policies here.  Unlike many on the left he goes past bashing Bush and “no blood for oil” to discuss our failure as a society to acknowledge our dependence on oil.

What he doesn’t mention in the article (but I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s discussed this somewhere else) is the incredible national security threat our oil dependency is.  We are taking a significant portion of our national wealth, and giving to people who hate us.  There is no other way to put it.  The citizens of Saudi Arabia, hate us.  The leadership of Venezuela, hates us.  The best we can get is Russia, who tolerates us but are probably still bitter about the whole Cold War.

We need a sane energy policy, and soon.  The center piece of that policy will probably have to be nuclear power.  If we all start driving hybrids tomorrow, we’ll still need to burn coal to make the electricity needed to charge the batteries.  Which means we’re going to have to get over our collective squeamishness for atomic energy.
