Let’s All Gather Round and Defend the Predator

Former Representative Mark Foley

Republicans would rather protect him than you.

I wasn’t going to write about Representative Mark Foley’s absolutely ridiculous behavior because others have done so with greater passion and skill than I could muster.  However, after this morning’s news, I’ve changed my mind.  The more voices raised against this disgrace to the nation, the better.

First there is this from the September 30th New York Times.

“Top House Republicans knew for months about e-mail traffic between Representative Mark Foley and a former teenage page, but kept the matter secret and allowed Mr. Foley to remain head of a Congressional caucus on children’s issues.”
New York Times

The top Republican representatives in question were John A Boehner, Thomas M Reynolds and J. Dennis Hastert.  That’s the Majority Leader, the Chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee and the Speaker of the House respectively.

Pervert Enabler

This goes well beyond politics.  These individuals knew of Mr. Foley’s transgressions and did nothing.  They demonstrated a lack of concern for the Congressional pages who were being subjected to this.  The showed no regards for the public, who might want to know that there is a pedophile in Congress.  Lastly, they showed no regards for Mr. Foley, who clearly needs some kind of help in addition to the jail time he’ll be getting.

Now this morning’s revelation that Internet “journalist” Matt Drudge is blaming the 16 and 17 year old boys who were receiving these text messages.  Audio FilesText.

And if anything, these kids are less innocent – these 16 and 17 year-old beasts… and I’ve seen what they’re doing on YouTube and I’ve seen what they’re doing all over the Internet – oh yeah – you just have to tune into any part of their pop culture.
Text of Drudge’s comments taken from www.firedoglake.com

That’s right!  Damn those 16 and 17 year olds for using the Internet.  And damn them again for going to websites like YouTube and MySpace.  The little perverts, tempting noble Congressmen with their young bodies.  Just like those disgraceful alter boys and their scandalous robes.

What utter crap!  Once again the Republican Party has made me ashamed to be an American.  To stay in power, they will cover up one man’s perversion.  To stay in power, they will throw up all kinds of smokescreen and do their best to throw this sick man under the bus.  To stay in power, they will blame children rather than take responsibility for their own wrongs.  And if you vote for them in November, you’re telling the country you’re cool with that.

  1. It is the classic Washington scandal dead girl or live boy – the age old nightmare of most of DC.

Albeit modernized for the internet age – with instant messaging.

Public office holders’ who violate the public trust is perhaps what is making so many angry that a law maker- is a law breaker.

But regardless of party affiliation – if indeed his party mates coddled him – then they too are equally guilty and should be made to pay the price.

  2. Agreed Mike. BTW, you wouldn’t happen to remember who coined that phrase about the dead girl or the live boy? I thought of it as soon as I heard this story and I’ve been wracking my brain trying to figure out who said it.

  3. Hmmm…
I think it goes further back than this to Europe… and post Cromwell era England… but:

[] “…Former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards once said he would never be defeated for re-election – unless he were caught in bed with a dead girl – or live boy. …”[] Huffington Post

I could have sworn it goes further back than that…

    cheers-
    Mike.

  4. Thanks Mike.
