Dumb and Dumber

This was dumb

This is dumber:

House Republican leaders introduced a resolution Monday condemning a full-page newspaper ad from MoveOn.org that criticizes the character of Gen. David Petraeus, the commanding general of U.S. troops in Iraq.

“The despicable attack MoveOn.org launched against General Petraeus today should be condemned by all Members of Congress, including the Democratic leadership,” Boehner said. “I urge Members on both sides of the aisle to join in support of this resolution so the House speaks with one voice rejecting the character assassination tactics employed by this extremist group.”

I’m no fan on the MoveOn.org ad.  I think it makes for bad politics in this situation to go for sensationalism.  We need to have an honest discussion of what is happening in Iraq and this move from MoveOn.org only adds more noise to the system.  That said, it is not the place of Congress to be telling the public or newspapers what is appropriate for publication.  We have libel and slander laws to protect us.  Furthermore, I hate this kind of grandstanding bullshit.  This is Republicans once again pissing on the idea of limited government in the hopes of scoring points.

Lastly, it’s worth noting that Petraeus is far from beyond reproach here.  At the very least, he has benefited in his own career by adopting a public stance on Iraq which mirrors that of the administration.  It is legitimate to question his motives even if the MoveOn.org ad is a poor way of doing it.  After all the general “betray us” tag didn’t originate in the press or in blogs, it originated amongst Petraeus’ own collegues in the military.
