Happy Birthday Sputnik

50 years ago today, the Russians opened up the Space age with the launch of Sputnik 1.  The tiny satellite was less than 2 feet wide and weighted less than 200 lbs.  Obviously it’s size is a poor measure of it’s impact.  The Russians followed with Sputnik 2 a month later, sending the first living creature into space, a dog named Laika.  12 years later mankind walked on the moon.  To steal a quote from the movie Apollo 13, there were no miracles in what we’ve achieved, we just decided to do it.
